Rapid urbanisation, growing populations, and increasing car ownership mean that over 92% of the global population are experiencing the adverse effects of air pollution.


Along with Project partners Kings College London we are creating a new Global Air quality index to enable key decision makers, including consumers, understand the impacts air quality has on their country, business, family and home.

Create a better understanding of air quality impacts

  • 20m resolution - Air quality metrics can be provided every 20m.

  • Complete coverage - Data will be provided continuously, throughout each city;

  • Unique EO derived input - No other model utilises satellite-derived vehicle detections (and certainly not derived speeds of each vehicle) as a proxy for vehicle emissions;

  • Robust scientific approach – This is the only product based upon emissions and dispersion models, both of which have a long track record in the air pollution field. The quality of the output will be summarised in a high impact journal paper to be drafted at the end of 2019.

  • Superior spatial / temporal resolution – VHR satellite imagery used to derive car counts at 30cm resolution and are able to classify moving vehicles from those that are parked;
