Managing Mangroves

How We Helped

Mangroves provide several important functions

including habitats for fish spawning, coastal protection, and carbon sequestration.

This project provides highly detailed baseline data of 5775 ha of Mangrove and 1869 ha of Mangrove Saltmarsh species at the crown level accurate at 90 % and 79 % respectively, as verified by specially commissioned ground truth data. These data are derived from a rule-based automated image processing and classification algorithm developed by us. The health of each crown is quantified, alongside a new Index to measure disturbance from natural and human interactions. Methods were developed with the view to be repeated at regular intervals over large scales.

Long-term monitoring for protection

These products are being used by the client to measure the current state of mangrove forests as the first instance baseline dataset in a long-term monitoring program.


The client is also using them to monitor the success of existing Mangrove regeneration initiatives, whilst prioritizing areas for conservation and planning future schemes over the Abu Dhabi Emirate.

Provision of Avicennia marina (grey mangrove) and Arthrocnemum macrostachyum (saltmarsh) biophysical status, extent and location were derived  from very-high resolution multispectral imagery over Abu Dhabi Emirate.

Project outputs include an ESRI GeoDatabase detailing the health and extent of both species at detailed and general scales; maps; a knowledge transfer/training program; and a 50cm ortho-photo mosaic.
